While they wore the Nine Rings they possessed mythic tiers, but since his initial defeat, Sauron has kept them locked in his Dark Tower for safekeeping, and the Ringwraiths now go without their rings.įell beasts are wretched dragon-kin bred as mounts for undead masters. The Nine walk abroad once more, though none but the Wise suspect their true nature.Įach Nazgûl is a unique high-level villain. But after a thousand years of peace, Sauron surreptitiously returned, and sent his Ringwraiths in secret to rebuild their ancient realms and weaken the forces of the Free Peoples. Sauron passed into the Void, and his Nazgûl went with him. The nine Nazgûl rallied their nations to Sauron’s aid in the War of the Last Alliance, holding off the elves and high men of Númenor, until by stroke of luck the One Ring was cut from Sauron’s hand by Isildur of Gondor. They became Nazgûl, slaves of the One Ring and Sauron’s deadliest servants. The rings magnified the inherent qualities of their bearers, making them mighty warlords or fell sorcerers, but as time wore on their wills were turned increasingly toward Sauron’s ends, and as they reached the end of the time allotted them as mortal men, they did not die, but passed into a shadowy unlife. Not all of the recipients of the Nine Rings were evil to begin with, but all burned with ambition and lust for power. He could not corrupt the stolid dwarves, but men all too easily fell under his influence. Making war on the elves, Sauron stole all but three of the Rings of Power (kept safeguarded by the elves), then distributed them among the Free Peoples of Middle-earth: seven for the dwarf-lords and nine for kings of mortal men. Thousands of years ago, in the Second Age of the world, Sauron forged the One Ring, which gave him mastery over the other Rings of Power created by the elven smiths under his deceptive tutelage. Once mighty kings of men, the nine Nazgûl - “Ringwraiths” in the Black Tongue of Mordor - are now but extensions of the will of the Dark Lord, Sauron.
